Here's a little Saulteaux (pronounced Sue-toe) Club history... - first section built: Maki Road to Goulais Avenue on November 23, 1974 - whole section officially opened on September 21, 1975 at a ceremony at Gros Cap before a crowd of approximately 150 people - first New Year's outing was held in 1975 - first Mother's Day outing was held in 1986 - helped to establish the Sault Trails Action Committee (STAC) to plan and build the SSM HUB TrailThe Saulteaux Voyageur Trail Club schedules over 30 outings a year including hikes, trail maintenance, snowshoes, bushwhack skiis and backpacking. You do NOT have to be fit to participate! We schedule several outings a year for small children and/or beginners. If in doubt, call the leader. He/She will be most willing to let you know how long you can expect to be out and what kind of terrain you may be covering. Then decide if that particular outing is for you. Come out and try us out! You are more than welcome! Saulteaux Club Outings (outside of Sault Ste. Marie area are marked with an *) For all outings, bring water, fly repellent, a lunch, and dress appropriately. Be prepared to sign an Assumption of Risk Agreement. Unless otherwise indicated, these outings are all a Level 2, slow (according to Hike Ontario recommended ratings.) Meeting location addresses: Goodlife building, 589 Second Line East (in parking lot on Second Line side); Market Mall 275 Second Line West (in parking lot on Korah Road corner); Churchill Plaza 150 Churchill Blvd., near Beer Store (on Trunk Road between Lake and Wellington). To check for any last-minute changes in this schedule, please call the outing leader listed. *Sat., July 10 ~ Kayak Lake Superior at Montreal River with Mark is CANCELLED (sorry). *Fri., July 16th evening, Sat., July 17 and Sun., July 18 ~ Backpack outing to LSPP. Contact Mike at 779-3409. Mon., July 19 ~ Saulteaux Club meeting at 7PM in the Civic Centre in the Thompson Room. We will plan our fall outing schedule. Call 942-1891. Sat., July 24 ~ Hike with Doris (942-9466). Please call for all the details. July 27/28 ~ Join the paddlers of a Voyageur Canoe travelling between Thunder Bay and Montreal this summer as they campout at the Sault Canal. There will be guided hikes at the Sault Canal during the day on July 27th. Call Mike at 779-3409 for specifics. Sun., August 1 ~ Hike in the Hiawatha Highlands with Ila (949-1097). Meet 10AM in the Goodlife parking lot to car pool. Behaved pets welcome. *Sat., August 7 ~ Paddle the Goulais River (2-3 hours) with Carole & Chris (649-2235) and bring a dish to share at potluck afterwards. Call for meeting time and place. *Sat., August 14 ~ Hike the North Country Trail and swim in Lake Superior afterwards. Bring lunch,water and swimsuit. No pets please. Meet at 9:30AM at the Michigan Welcome Center. Contact Gail at 942-0768 for more info. *Sat. to Sun., Aug. 21 & 22 ~ LSPP Mijin Lake or Gargantua kayak with Mark. Call 254-2356 for meeting place and time. *Sun., August 22 ~ Hike to Griffin Lake Peak (3rd highest peak in Ontario and across from Batchewana Mountain). Lots of uphills on this hike! Contact Dawn at 649-4936 for meeting place and time. Sun., Aug. 29 ~ Hike at Red Rock cottage area with Gayle. Meet at 10 AM in the Market Mall parking lot to car pool. Behaved pets welcome. SAULTEAUX SECTION NOTICES: For anyone thinking they can use the new Brookfield Windfarm Road, you must go to Brookfield's office and sign a Waiver AND you are not allowed to park on the road. Your vehicled WILL be towed. The Waiver is just to pass over the road, not to park there. Anyone using the Camp Korah area at the end of Goulais Avenue: please do NOT park in the Camp Korah parking lot. You may be inadvertently locked in behind a gate with no way to get your vehicle out. Saulteaux Trail Conditions (updated July 2010): Gros Cap Loop Trail (pdf brochure) (access S-A1 via Marshall Drive and Jackson Island Road) (adopted by Mike & Cheryl Landmark). Cleaned and blazed (May 2010) 10) The trail is CLOSED west of Prince Lake Road (A3). The landowner has removed the blazes and asked that no one hike here. An alternate route is being planned. You can still travel east along trail the first 0.9 km but must exit on Marshall Drive. NO EXIT to Prince Lake Road (A3) at this time. A3 - Prince Lake Road to A4 Airport Road extension is passable. (October 2009) Airport Road Extension (A4) to Creek Road (A5): CLOSED due to landowner request. An alternate route is being planned. (September 2007) Creek Road (A5) to Maki Road (A7a) (adopted by Mike Barker): The gravel pit at the end of Carpin Beach Road has been expanded and a lot of blazes are missing. Watch for a re-route in the fall. (July 2010). Maki Road (A7) to Goulais Avenue (A8) [The Dr. Paul Syme Section] (adopted by Alvin & Carey Olar 942-6505): Cleaned and blazed (September 2008). **A note for hikers planning to park their vehicles on Goulais Avenue. Do NOT park in the Camp Korah parking lot. Due to dumping and damage to school property the gate can be closed and locked at any time, day or night, so even if it is open, it may not remain that way for long and your vehicle could be locked in! Goulais Avenue (A8) to end of Peoples Road (A10) to Old Goulais Bay Road (A11) (adopted by Horst Wetzl):good shape (expect wet feet over beaver dam). Trail has bee re-routed over the stream where there used to be a bridge, but it is crossable at this juncture of the stream. (August 2009) Crimson Ridge Loop (A9) (pdf brochure)(yellow blazed)(adopted by Doris Welz): good (May 2009). Old Goulais Bay Road (A11) to West Branch Root River (adopted by Mike Barker): good shape (May 2009) West Branch of Root River to Glenview Vacation Homes on Highway 17 (A12) (adopted by Mike Barker): Near the middle of this segment, trail markers are missing for several hundred metres where trail passes through areas of recent clear cut logging; safest way to cross these clear cuts is by following orange-flagged snowmobile trail path for approx. 800 metres to where it rejoins marked main trail. Good shape (November 2008) Highway 17 (A12) to Crystal Creek (A15) (available for adoption): good (November 2008). Crystal Creek (A15) to Mabel Lake (Saulteaux eastern terminus at Km41.2) (adopted by Don McGorman): good shape. (November 2008). Odena Loop Trail (A13) (adopted by Steve Dominy): cleaned and blazed (May 2010). This 4 km yellow blazed loop trails connects with the main trail at two locations: (west) just east of the Root River bridge where trail enters forest north of Sixth Line; (east) at bend in trail just north of the Crystal Creek crossing. Beaver Link Trail (A16) (adopted by Don McGorman): cleaned and blazed (November 2008). This 3.5 km yellow blazed link trail connects (west) with the Odena Loop trail approximately 1.5 km north of the gate at the end of Connor Road and (east) with the main trail 0.5 km west of Mabel Lake. The Tom Allinson Side Trail: Jackson Island Road (A1) to creek and onto Lake Superior shoreline (adopted by Mike & Cheryl Landmark): in good shape (May 2010). Lake Superior shoreline at creek to Lakeshore Drive (at Pebble Beach via Red Rock Road) (TAST at 6.0)- (adopted by Gail Andrew): (May 2010) Good shape. The Hub Trail Route: Note: several pedestrian trail paths have been developed to be roughly aligned with the planned route of the municipal multi-use non-motorized Hub trail. Third Line to Second Line this trail passing mainly through the Fort Creek Conservation Area is under constructon and is slated to be finished for March of 2011. Finn Hill to Northern Avenue The Jim Miller Memorial Trailhead will be dedicated on Sat., June 12th, 2010 @ noon. Second Line to Queen Street West (along Carmen's Way is built and kept in good shape by the City of Sault Ste. Marie) Waterfront Boardwalk from Canal Drive to Clergue Park and the main branch of the public library is built and kept in good shape by the City of Sault Ste. Marie.
