Additional information for buyers of map products:Trail guide products (printed guidebook or PDF version of individual sections) consist of the full-colour 1:50,000 maps with legend and a text description from the latest edition (2007) of the Voyageur Hiking Trail Guidebook. They were custom-made using digital technology, and include key information of interest to hikers, snowshoers, etc. The maps are numbered consecutively with numbers depicting both the map's placement as part of the overall trail system and as a map within the relevant section of the trail. There are a total of 16 trail sections, spanning between Nipigon and Spanish. The section name appears periodically on the map along the trail route, printed in red. Where specific segments of the trail have been given a special name designation, the name is also printed in red on the map. Distances from the beginning of each section are indicated periodically along the hiking route on the maps. Members are sent notices of changes to the trail periodically in the newsletter, and non-members are advised when and where a change has been made (but not the details of the change) via the website www.voyageurtrail.ca.
The National Topographic System (NTS) map number is also included on each map. Hikers are advised to carry both the relevant NTS map(s) and the Guidebook map(s). The NTS maps show a larger area and can be useful in identifying distant peaks and the destination of waterways, locating access points, etc. The map datum is NAD 83.
For GPS map products, these include full NTS 1:50,000 map sheets, along with the Voyageur Trail route, access points, and other waypoints of interest to trail users. GPS products have only been tested on Garmin GPS units. All or some of the maps can be transferred to the GPS (there are a total of 16 maps). Once loaded on the GPS individual tiles can be turned off to increase screen refresh rates. Maps can only be transferred using SendMap20 software; software is supplied with GPS map orders. Note: GPS map products do not include a GPS unit or a text description of the trail route. The trail route description is only available by purchasing a guidebook of the entire trail (as completed to date) or a PDF of a single section. GPS maps and PDF versions of trail sections are provided for download - the buyer will normally receive via email instructions on downloading within 72 hours of submitting their order.
